Otis Reddings Version des Weihnachtsklassiker “White Christmas” ist unübertroffen: Zerrissen, verzweifelt und sehnsüchtig träumt er von einem weissen Fest. Poly Styrene zerschmettert, von einem Reggae- Rhythmus unterlegt, die weihnachtliche Idylle. Ella Fitzgerald hingegen lädt zur unbeschwerten Schlittenfahrt. Und Neil Diamond zitiert sein eigenes Repertoire.

Die Spotify-Liste ist eine eigenwillige, aber nicht zufällige Mischung aus Soullegenden, Rockgiganten, Jazz, Elvis und Indiebands.

Fröhliche Weihnachten. Oder wie die Ramones sagen würden: Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight).

Historische Gitarren unter Wasser

Was haben die Gitarren von Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King,  Les Paul, Tommy Tedesco, Pete Townshend und Peter Frampton gemeinsam?

Das reissende Wasser hat sie alle am 1. Mai  in Nashville beschädigt. Die Instrumente gehören zur Sammlung des Museums Musicians Hall of Fame and Music, das kürzlich seine Räumlichkeiten wegen eines bevorstehenden Abbruchs verlassen musste. Deshalb wurden die Instrumente eingelagert. Unglücklicherweise liegt das Lagerhaus am Cumberland Fluss und wurde von der Jahrtautausendflut überschwemmt.

Rick Rubins Modell zur Rettung der Musikindustrie

Musikproduzent Rick Rubin hat unter anderem zusammengearbeitet mit Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Metallica, Beastie Boys und Red Hot Chili Peppers. Seit kurzem ist er auch noch Co-Leiter des Musiklabels Columbia (gehört zu Sony BMG). In einem Bericht von Spiegel Online erklärt er sein Modell zur Rettung der Musikindustrie:

Musik im Abo, was, genauer gesagt, bedeutet, dass man künftig eine monatliche Gebühr von vielleicht 15 Euro zahlt und dafür uneingeschränkten Zugriff auf jedwede Musik erhält. “Die Zukunft sieht so aus”, sagt Rubin, erhebt sich und greift nach einem kleinen, schmucklosen Apparat, der wie eine TV-Fernbedienung aussieht. Ein Prototyp, mit dem man das Repertoire aller großen Online-Musikanbieter abrufen kann. “Was wollen Sie hören?”, fragt er. “Talking Heads? ,Remain in Light’?” Vergnügt wie ein großes Kind gibt er die Anfrage in seine Fernbedienung ein, und kurz darauf erklingen die Talking Heads aus Rubins Edellautsprechern. “Wer braucht da noch Tonträger?”, fragt er.

The Best of The Johnny Cash TV Show (1969-1971)

Legendary Country singer and songwriter Johnny Cash hosted the unique «Johnny Cash TV Show» from 1969 until 1971. It was shown on the US network ABC. Cash not only presented country musicians. He also invited singer/songwriters, folk, rock, rhythm and blues musicians and others – a very eclectic blend of music. The double DVD set The Best Of The Johnny Cash TV Show takes you on a fascinating musical journey back in time.

For contemporary ears it’s surprising to hear that the musicians on «The Johnny Cash TV Show» performed live. Live performances is something that only happens very seldom in today’s television shows. Back than there was no playback. The music was really live. It’s a pleasure to see the different musicians that Cash invited to the show. The show was open to country legends, rockstars and soul singers – there were no restrictions. Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Chet Atkins, Derek And The Dominos (with Eric Clapton), Stevie Wonder, Loretta Lynn, Charlie Pride, Kris Kristofferson, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Marty Robbins: they all were welcome.

Johnny Cash sang duets with many guests. He sang with Bob Dylan, Louis Armstrong, Jony Mitchell, and Pete Seeger. These duets are not too perfect, but very likeable. The charisma of Johnny Cash is breathtaking and he touches the soul with his deep religiousness, that doesn’t have a hypocritical undertone.

There are over 50 songs on the DVDs, the package is well done, and the booklet is informative. Besides the show there are interviews with Johnny Cash’s son John Carter Cash, Hank Williams Jr., musical arranger Bill Walker, and others. Theres only one downside: after seeing «The Johnny Cash TV Show» you won’t accept musicians that play playback. Because you have seen and heard the real thing. You may even catch yourself mumbling something like «back in the old times everything was better». And you’re right – at least where music is concerned.
